This Newsletters Spotlight is on the Effingham IL Bridge Club, which is managed and directed by Donna Swick.
COVID-19 has really put a damper on our fun!
Only 3 ½ months ago, I was known as Donna Swick. Our club met regularly on Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Park District for friendly fun, snacks, and competition. Our last real games were held on March 11 & 12, 2020. I really miss the sound of the cards being shuffled, the smell of the coffee being brewed, and just being with people catching up on the weeks happenings. I am sure I am not the only one.
Those were the good ol days!
Now we play online bridge. I am known as Gayle2. Bridge Base Online (BBO) and ACBL have teamed up to provide online games to keep our skills sharp and our spirits up. It is great to play with people we have met either at our club or tournaments. I look forward to every evening so I can play a BBO tournament with one of my two face to face bridge partners. A big Thank You to both.
Until face-to-face bridge is safe, I encourage anyone who has not played online to Get out there! At first, it is a little overwhelming; just like your first hand of bridge. And you know how much fun you have had since then.
Whenever the Effingham Bridge Club can meet again, the games are held at
Ron Diehl Center (Hendelmeyer Recreation Center), 1904 S Fourth Street,
Effingham IL. The games are held on Wednesday and Thursday nights starting at 7
p.m. For more information, you can reach Donna at 618-783-1860 or

WELCOME to Lawrence Newquist, Godfrey IL
and Diane Gearing, Harrisburg IL who are new members of Unit 223!
Since we are all staying in as much as possible and not getting to play bridge at our regular clubs, playing online is the new normal.
Bridge Base Online (BB0) is teaming with ACBL to bring new ways to support our local clubs. Check out BBO to see what it has to offer. Every day, there are games that will Support Your Local Club (SYNC).
Also, through BBO, Unit 223 has been invited to play with the Central Illinois Virtual Bridge Club. They have several games each week; most of them are open games, but they are also offering a 199er game, a 299er game and a 499er game. Also, twice a month, there is a mentor/mentee game. As an extra bonus, they're offering free lessons and workshops.
