In Memory
A World War II veteran, Alan had a long career as a reporter, attorney and federal judge. He started playing bridge in law school and became the first Life Master in McLean County. He and his favorite partner, his wife Ann, had many successes in Central Illinois tournaments. After her death in 2005, he traveled extensively, playing in high-level tournaments throughout North America. Alan had a keen sense of humor and great energy for our game. He felt that the discipline of bridge helped ward off dementia and fervently hoped that young people would spark a new generation of interest in contract bridge.
Clare grew up in Memphis TN and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in chemistry from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame IN. She worked as a substitute teacher and instructor for home-bound students, but spent most of her life caring for others and volunteering for local charities. She attended mass every day and was a leader in many church organizations. Clare was a tiny lady with a big personality and infectious laugh that made her a favorite at the Bridge at Ginger Creek club in Champaign. Our deepest sympathies go out to her six children, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and her many friends. Jackie Tatting, 84, of Peoria died on April 12 after suffering a stroke. Jackie graduated from Grinnell College and Bradley University and worked as an accountant and office assistant for architects. She and her husband Warren, who died in 1998, had a long, successful bridge partnership. They were widely admired not just for their bridge skill, but for their graciousness, sportsmanship and devotion to each other. Jackie had many talents -- she was also a gifted seamstress and quilter -- and was generous in sharing her knowledge with others. She was a club manager and taught many bridge classes in her home. She played infrequently after Warren died, but recently came out of "bridge retirement" to help run a Bridge Improvement class in Peoria. She will be deeply missed. Movin' UpCongratulations to these Unit members who recently advanced in rank:
